COACH INFORMATION HUB

 

WELCOME TO TROJAN YOUTH SOCCER


Thank you for volunteering to coach with Trojan Youth Soccer. As a nonprofit, volunteer‑run organization, we rely on dedicated community members like you to help create a safe, positive, and development‑focused soccer experience for our players.


OUR MISSION: Teach the game. Build confidence. Encourage teamwork. Create a fun environment for every child.

COACH REQUIREMENTS

 All Trojan Youth Soccer coaches must complete the following:


Mandatory Items

  • Background check
  • SafeSport certification
  • Concussion awareness training
  • Agreement to follow all league and Indiana Soccer policies


Coach Code of Conduct

Coaches are expected to:

  • Model sportsmanship and respect
  • Prioritize player safety
  • Communicate clearly with families
  • Support equal playing time
  • Treat referees respectfully
  • Encourage effort, learning, and fun

PLAYER SAFETY

 Player safety is our top priority.


Concussion Protocol

If a player shows signs of concussion:

  • Remove them immediately
  • Do not allow return to play
  • Notify parents
  • Require medical clearance


Heat & Hydration

  • Provide frequent water breaks
  • Reduce intensity in extreme heat
  • Cancel practice if conditions are unsafe


Lightning Policy

Trojan Youth Soccer follows the 30–30 Rule:

  • If lightning is seen or thunder is heard within 30 seconds → Stop immediately
  • Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming
  • Inform players and families that they must return to their vehicle - NOT THE PLAYGROUND

Injury Reporting

Coaches must report any injury requiring potential medical attention to the board.

TEAM FORMATION & ROSTERS

How Teams Are Formed

  • Balanced teams created using player evaluations
  • Coaches’ children placed on their team
  • Siblings placed together unless requested otherwise


Special Requests

Due to limited board capacity and the time required to process them, Trojan Youth Soccer cannot honor special placement requests.


Playing Time

All recreational players receive equal playing time.

PRACTICE GUIDELINES

Practice Frequency

  • 1–2 practices per week
  • 60 minutes maximum


Recommended Practice Model (Play–Practice–Play)

  1. Play – Free play warm‑up (10 minutes)
  2. Practice – Skill activity or guided learning (20–25 minutes)
  3. Play – Game‑like scrimmage (20–25 minutes)


Equipment Checklist

League provided coach bag should be brought to all practices and games. It will have all items needed for practice/game along with a first aid kit.


Field Rules

  • Use assigned fields only
  • No practices when fields are closed
  • Clean up after every session.

GAME DAY INFORMATION

Before the Game

  • Arrive 15–20 minutes early
  • Warm up players
  • Check equipment (shin guards, cleats, socks)
  • Check jewelry including earrings

               - PERMANENT JEWELRY - required to be removed or taped down and covered

               - EARRINGS - must be removed, if they are new piercings they must be covered. 


During the Game

  • Encourage players
  • Avoid over‑coaching
  • Respect referees
  • Rotate players fairly


After the Game

  • Sportsmanship handshake to opposing team
  • Positive feedback
  • Reminders for next practice/game
  • Pass out treat bags (only games played at Sunman Elementary will receive treat bags on weekends only)

PARENT COMMUNICATION

Expectations

Coaches should:

  • Communicate schedule changes promptly
  • Maintain a positive, respectful tone


Handling Concerns

  • Listen first
  • Stay calm
  • Avoid discussing issues in front of players
  • Being disrespectful/yelling at a referee will not be tolerated
  • Not only are you responsible for your actions, but this could negatively impact your child's team.
  • Refer major concerns to the board


Multi‑Sport Participation

We support multi‑sport athletes. When conflicts arise:

  • Games generally take priority over practices
  • Encourage balanced attendance
  • Communicate early with both coaches

LEAGUE POLICIES

Playing Up

Allowed only with board approval.


Playing Down

Permitted only for documented physical or developmental needs.


Weather Cancellations

  • Determined by field conditions and safety
  • Posted on league communication channels


Rescheduling

Please reach out to league scheduler and referee coordinator on new possible date and time. 


Spectator Expectations

  • Cheer positively
  • No coaching from the sideline
  • No profanity or disrespect
  • Violations may result in removal
  • Refusal to leave upon request will result in the league contacting Law Enforcement.
